I spent time as artist in residence at the Alhambra in Granada over three years. The best time to be there is winter, when the Sierra Nevada is covered in snow..
I was very lucky to become friends with many of the people who care for the Alhambra, especially the gardeners, who are its alma mater. I learned so much from them and the colours of the gardens dominated my palette.
I love working outdoors and the cypresses of the Alhambra and the Generalife have become a recurring motif in my work, because of their form and as symbols of eternity.
After spending time at the Alhambra, I return to my studio energised by the brilliant light, the reflections in the water and sound of the fountains.
