I designed and painted sets for productions of Carmen and Cavalleria Rusticana/i Pagliacci at Woodhouse Opera.
It’s a beautiful open air opera with a woodland auditorium which looks down to the stage and the lake below. It was wonderful to create large paintings in the open air listening to the sound of the trees. One day it rained while I was painting, and the rain added streaks to my brushstrokes, so I incorporated these accidental elements into my design.
The changing shadows from the trees added constant movement to the image and after a particularly long day, the producer came looking for me with a torch, but I was so happy to be painting outdoors surrounded by nature and unconfined by the studio walls that I didn’t want to stop.
